It is plug and play, but also comes with the LaCie Setup Assistant to make reformatting easy if the setup it comes with isn't desired. Since the surface area is used for heat dissipation the LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk does not need a noisy, disruptive fan. It comes with one of the newer LaCie features, the LaCie Shortcut button that allows the easy launch of any application just by pushing a button. This can include the software that comes with the device, the EMC Retrospect advanced backup software for both PCs and Macs. This software is a great inclusion for users who aren't sure where to start in using the device as a backup system.
