Verbatim FireWire 400/USB
$150.00
Released January, 2009
The Pros:Good price / capacity ratios compared to other Mac centric hard drives from manufacturers such as LaCie. Designed for Mac users, pre-formatted with HFS+, ready to use right out of the box. Slim and sleek design, one of the more attractive budget external drives.
The Cons:If you are using the USB connection, it might require 2 USB cables to power, Firewire users are fine. Below average file transfer performance with both Firewire and USB connection compared to options from Iomega and Western Digital. Possible reliability issues with buyers reporting issues with the internal board.
The Verbatim FireWire 400/USB is a 5400RPM external/portable hard-disc drive built for transferring and/or storing files. It offers two connections: USB 2.0 @ 480Mb/s or FireWire 400 @ 400Mb/s. And it requires no external power, as it is receives energy directly from a connected computer unit.

It is backwards compatible with USB 1.1, but Verbatim recommends using the 400/USB only with the following operating systems: Windows 2000, XP, or Vista; Mac OS 9x or Mac OS X 10.1+. If any problems do occur, the FireWire 400/USB does at least host a 3 year limited warranty—more than enough time have any OEM errors fixed.
