Western Digital My Book Elite 2nd-gen
$170.00
Released January, 2009
The Pros:Backup software uses a very simple interface. Very quiet, difficult to hear it at all. Will write constantly for hours and only get slightly warm.
The Cons:Can't label the drive without installing the backup software. Initial install is counter-intuitive and confusing. Included software not Windows 7 compatible, downloaded "update" is actually full software but mislabelled.

Unique to the My Book Elite is its Smart Display, which allows users to manufacture an ‘e-label’ that appears on the frame of the unit and reminds the user of what’s stored on the drive. Even more noticeable is the addition of WD SmartWare software, which presents a visual control center where users can monitor, back-up, and secure all their data. In fact, the software allows for both password protection AND 256-bit hardware-based encryption.
