As a more affordable alternative to the My Book Elite, the Essential discards its predecessor’s Smart Display in favor of an illuminated capacity gauge that shows the approximate amount of space currently available on the drive. Like its peer, the unit features WD SmartWare software, which presents a visual control center where users can monitor, back-up, and secure all their data. In fact, the software allows for both password protection AND 256-bit hardware-based encryption.
