Western Digital WD Elements Desktop

$144.99 Released September, 2009

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Small size and reasonable weight makes it fairly easy to carry around. Software is easy to use, can format and partition the drive in a few minutes. General usage is very plug-and-play, software is completely optional.

The Cons:Lacks an on/off switch, a little disconcerting to turn it off by unplugging it. Advertised top speed of 480Mb/s is unlikely to be achieved on most PCs. Requires a separate power cable, won't draw power through the USB connection.

The Western Digital WD Elements Desktop is an external HDD. The maximum serial bus transfer rate of this USB 2.0 device is 480 Mb/s. The Elements Desktop allows you to plug in to your computer and instantly be able to use it, with a USB cable and quick install guide included.

Though this external HDD can be reformatted for use with Mac computers (Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard), it comes preformatted for PCs (Windows 7/Vista/XP). This HDD differs from the identically priced Elements Portable model in that it is made for desktop use (and so is not as compact and light as the Elements Portable, which is 0.6" x 5.0" x 3.10", 0.44 pounds compared to the Desktop's 1.42" x 7.01" x 4.59", 2.24 pounds), and has higher drive capacity options than the Elements Portable (from 500GB to as high as 2TB). The Western Digital WD Elements Desktop comes in recyclable packaging made from recycled materials.
